This is an exciting project - my first CARD ART Stories piece. I have so many fond memories from my youth of reading books with my father, sister Taylor and brother Garrett, every night before bed. Whimsical stories which took me to magical places, inspired my imagination and are a big part of who I am today.
CARD ART Stories allow those memories to be revisited, to bring the words and images together in a way not done before, as readable art, which I hope brings back fond memories for others and inspires a new generation to embrace the joy of reading.
For my first piece I chose a story from one of my favorite books, Pooh's First Day of School from a first edition hardcover copy of My Very First Winnie the Pooh - Growing up Stories, written by Kathleen W. Zoehfelds with silver gilt on the page edges and illustrations by Robbin Cuddy, published in 1999 by Disney Press (last published in 2000). Here is a photo of the cover of the book (the cover image is not part of the artwork I created):

I designed this piece so that it forms a picture within a picture through the placement, in the centre, of the beautiful illustrations, which are then surrounded by the pages of text.
The eye is naturally drawn to the centre of the piece with its explosion and concentration of beautiful colors. Because of the size of the book (9 1/2" x 9"), although I tried to use the actual sized pages, I had to copy and shrink the images to create a manageable piece of art.
This piece was a tremendous amount of work due to the number of elements involved (there are 30 "pages"). The number of possible configurations is very large and I tried many before settling on the one I used. As well, once I had settled on a configuration, the actual placing of the cards in alignment took a significant amount of work.
A lot of work, but well worth it as I believe it turned out wonderfully!
The 30 "pages" I used are as follows (and at the bottom of this page you will find a brief "the making of Winnie the Pooh" video to provide you with a glimpse into how it was made):
