For my second CARD ART Stories piece I wanted to do something a bit different. CARD ART Stories 001 (Winnie-the-Pooh) was purposely a "calming" piece, hoping to invoke feelings of warmth and familiarity. For this piece I wanted more...randomness and so turned to who else but Dr. Seuss!

Theodore Seuss Geise wrote and illustrated over 60 wonderfully imaginative books under the pen name, Dr. Seuss. It is his artistry of both word and image, that this piece honors. I chose one of my personal favorites, "There's a WOCKET in my POCKET!" with its wildly creative rhymes, wonderfully bright and off beat colors and vivid images. Importantly, and consistent with CARD ART Stories being "readable art", I chose the 5" x 7" gloss board book as the basis of my work.
It was a fair amount of work deconstructing the book (took multiple copies) but doing this, I believe makes the piece feel more familiar and authentic to people.
The challenge was bringing it all together in something new: a cohevise piece that embraced, preserved and accentuated the apparent randomness. After trying a tremendous number of variations (and to be honest, almost giving up), I finally found something that worked. Placing the cover of the book in the centre of the image allowed me to focus on the brightest element of the book (the yellow jumps out!), while also framing its context. Giving that cover the space it needs to reinforce its centrality to the art and the book, moved me to enveloping it in a square which acts counterintuitively to draw the eyes...everywhere.
Finally, I topped it all off by using two wildly vivid colors for the frame which I fell really add to the overall aesthetic of the work and hopefully act to draw you into to the wonderfully imaginative world of the Dr. Seuss stories.
Where does the story begin, where does it end, what's the reason, what's the rhyme?
I embraced this sentiment to really engage the viewer - to pull them into the story. It's quite simple actually, the beginning is in the top left corner and the end in the bottom right. In between however, let the fun begin! The pages have been purposely placed out of order (uniquely balance word and color) so as engage the viewer either visually through color or from the perspective of them wanting to search out the pages in the originally published order or to experience the pages in a new light/order...every time they view it. For reference, here is the originally published order:
