I had been wanting to do a "Year of the..." piece for a few years but had just not been able to find the right piece(s) to work with. A couple of years ago I did find four different 2008 Year of the Rat cards, each which I loved, however they did not work well together and I could not find more of any of them. It is always a challenge to find the right pieces, in the right quantities, to create my work from. Fast forward to 2024 however, and the Year of the Dragon has provided me with just the inspiration I needed! Good fortune indeed!
While visiting Post Office early in the year I found a 1/4 ounce, $8 pure silver coin produced by the Royal Canadian Mint, which was sealed in a clear removable capsule and attached to a beautiful 5 1/2" x 5 1/2" red folder. It came with a matching red envelope.
The moment I saw the red folder with the coin attached I knew that I could use it to create a very unique CARD ART Originals work of art!
While I have not been able to confirm who crafted the design which adorns the folder itself (which is what I was drawn to and which underscores the philosophy behind card art that "like beauty, art is everywhere, art is everything - in things you look at but do not really see, in things you see, but do not really look at"), the artwork of the dragon on one side of the coin was created by Canadian artist Aries Cheung and the artwork of Queen Elizabeth II on the other side of the coin was created by Susanna Blunt. Beautiful work!

I was fortunate to find pieces still in circulation (they are now sold out) and looked at many, many different configurations before settling on the one that I finally used to create my work. I love the vibrancy of the colors and as such did not enhance the folder in any way (did not add another element such as a backer card etc.). I also left the folders intact, which was a challenge, but which I felt enhanced the overall finished piece.
I hope people find the completed work very compelling and unique, particularly relative to the many elements, and their respective meanings, at play on the card, on the coin(s) in the layout and overall.
Suffice to say, I also hope this piece bestows good fortune on all who experience it!
